Finally official at something...

I’m now officially represented as a TV commercials director for Homecorp.
But I ain’t had a job yet so maybe I’m not official just yet!

I’m well happy to be on board with these guys though. They make some great stuff and have a bloody good lucking production team!

Just pitched for a nice job with them before Christmas, let’s wait and see what Santy brings.

Bit of a late blog post… I managed to pic up my first ever proper award the other week from the Promax awards. We managed to gain a silver award for the Tv commercial we did during last summer, for Carlsbourg’s Tuborg lager. We lost the gold against Fox’s Walking dead campaign which had zombies shot in super slo-mo, getting their heads blown off, pretty cool!

48hr film comp

Check out our entry into the smoke and mirrors 48hr film competition.

It was a crazy couple of days, just about everything that could have went wrong did go wrong, but at the end of it I think we managed to come up with great little short. Well done to everyone involved including Nick Francis the director and the super talented DP Adam Etherington; check his site at http://adametherington.co.

I will put up some behind the scenes pics in my next post. I Don’t know how to do it in this iPhone app!

Hope you guys like it.

Building a spaceship

I recently directed a music video which required me to build a full 360 degree spaceship cockpit. I really like to get involved with designing and building stuff like this so me and Amelia (my creative partner) took on all the work ourselves, with a couple of days help from some good friends, Rob and Mike.

The whole thing took about 4 days to make from start to finish. As I was the only one building the frame of the ship I didn’t really need to draw up any plans, I just kind of had the shape in my head and went with it. I started by building a frame out of 2x4 studding timber, once that was finished I lined the inside out with hardboard and gave it all a coat of black paint. Then came the fun part… we had to use our imaginations to try and find as much cheap spaceship looking stuff as we could. Basically anything in my house (and where ever else I went) that had stuff with buttons or unusual angles was quickly removed and stuck to part of the spaceship paneling. For the lights we used LED Christmas tree fairy lights. We pre-drilled little holes where ever we wanted a light to be flashing and then poked an led trough from the back.

Once everything was painted and the fairy lights were in place we switched them all on. To our surprise it looked like a proper spaceship! well not quite. It looked more like the set of a spaceship from a CBB’S drama, and that was good enough for me. I think we got quite close to the Red Dwarf look I was going for.

The whole thing was so much fun to build, everyone was really sad to pull it down at the end. I would have loved to have shot a short in it once we had finished the music video, but unfortunately the studio needed it out the day after our shoot, phewey.

Some clips from the video can be seen in my showreel which I posted up yesterday. It was all shot by the amazing Barney Davis on RED MX.

I can’t quite remember how much it cost to build the ship but it wasn’t a lot. Go forth and turn all your garages into spaceship cockpits!

Here are some pics taken during the shoot.

My new showreel! Clips from 15 of my best pieces of work dating back from june 2010.

Shot mainly on DSLR’s and RED MX. Can you guess which is the RED? Oh and some shots on the amazing and loads of fun, Phantom Flex.

Check out my portfolio page where I will be uploading the full pieces from the reel along with any new stuff I feel is worth putting up. http://vimeopro.com/jamrochi/jamiechilds

Enjoy.
